What does campervan insurance cover?
There are three main levels of campervan insurance:
- Third Party: The minimum legal requirement, covering damage or injury to others but not your campervan.
- Third Party, Fire and Theft: Adds cover for fire damage and theft of your campervan.
- Comprehensive: The most extensive protection, including accidental damage to your campervan, even if you are at fault.
There are also three main categories of use:
- Social, Domestic, and Pleasure: This type of cover is ideal for non-business purposes such as weekend trips, camping, visiting family and friends, or running personal errands.
- Commuting: Required if you use your campervan to travel to and from a single workplace. Though less common for campervans, it applies to those using the vehicle as a primary mode of transport.
- Personal Business Use: Provides cover for broader activities, such as driving to business meetings or events. This is crucial if you use your campervan for self-employment or work-related purposes in addition to commuting.
When selecting a policy, think about how you plan to use your campervan. Whether it’s for holidays, daily commutes, or occasional outings, make sure you choose the appropriate level of cover.
How much does campervan insurance cost?
Several factors can influence the cost of a campervan insurance policy:
Usage and mileage
How frequently you use your campervan and the distance you drive can influence your premiums. More use or longer trips increase risk exposure, often leading to higher rates.
Value of the campervan
The value of your campervan affects your insurance costs. Higher-value vehicles are generally more expensive to repair or replace, resulting in higher premiums.
Location
Your area of residence is a key factor in determining your premiums. Living in a region with higher rates of accidents, theft, or crime may result in increased insurance costs.
Type of campervan
The type of campervan you own impacts your insurance rates. Larger and more luxurious models typically have higher premiums than coachbuilt types.
Driving record
Your driving history, including any accidents or motoring offences, can affect your rates. A clean record usually means lower premiums due to reduced risk.
Storage and security
How and where you store your campervan, as well as the security measures in place, can influence costs. Anti-theft devices and secure storage can help lower your premiums.
What you’ll need to compare the best campervan insurance prices
Our mission is to give you the best campervan insurance deal in the shortest possible time. But we’ll need some information from you to make sure we’re giving you an accurate price.
Your personal information (which is 100% secure)
Apart from the obvious reasons, we’ll need your name, address and date of birth to make sure you are who you say you are. Insurance application fraud is at its highest ever level and our background checks ensure everybody pays a fair price.
Your vehicle registration number and details
We’ll search DVLA and SMMT data to ensure we’ve got accurate information about your campervan.
Your driving licence number and details of your driving history
Providing your driving licence number (“DLN”) allows for validation of your entitlement to drive certain types of vehicles and your driving history. Some of our insurer partners will offer a discount for confirming your DLN.
Details of any No Claims Bonus you’ve earned
If you’ve been insured as a campervan driver previously and are accident-free, the chances are you’ve got a No Claims Bonus (“NCB”). Your NCB will usually reduce your premium by 30-70%, so it’s important you know exactly how many years’ entitlement you have.
Full details of any additional drivers you want to drive your vehicle
You’ll need to provide the same information about any other drivers, and you should have their permission to do so before you get a quote.
Campervan insurance frequently asked questions
Is campervan insurance different from car insurance?
Whilst both types of cover are essentially motor insurance, campervan insurance will usually provide specific elements of cover tailored for campervan owners.
Will my driving licence allow me to drive a campervan?
This depends on when you passed your driving test but you should be able to drive a motorhome or campervan without taking any special driving tests. If you passed your test before 1997 and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you’re good to drive any motorhome up to 8.250kg in weight. If you passed your test in 1997 or later and your licence shows a Category B entitlement, you can drive a motorhome up to 3,500kg in weight. For large motorhomes, your licence would need to show Category C, Category CE, Category C1 or Category C1E. You can check your entitlements on the Government website.
Am I covered to travel abroad in my campervan?
All of our policies allow you to drive in EU countries for at least 30 days a year. If you travel abroad more frequently, for longer periods of time or travel outside of EU countries, we can tailor your policy to provide extended foreign use cover.
Will I need to install any security devices to my campervan?
We actively encourage campervan owners to install approved safety and security devices and offer generous discounts to those owners who take safety and security seriously. However, this isn’t compulsory unless your motorhome is of particularly high value or isn’t stored in a secure location.
I’ve converted a van into a campervan myself – is that OK?
Of course, provided that it meets requirements and is registered as a motor caravan with DVLA. Unlike some other campervan insurance providers, we won’t make you jump through hoops to provide evidence of the conversion. If your vehicle doesn’t meet DVLA’s requirements to be reclassified, take a look at our Motorhome and campervan conversions guide.
As well as campervan insurance, we also cover motorhomes with motorhome insurance.
